To many people the Scottish Highlands (a' Ghaidhealtachd in Gaelic) and Scotland itself are one and the same thing. This could not be further from the truth, the Scottish Highlands have a very distinct history and geography from the rest of Scotland. The Scottish Highlands are not only separate from the rest of Scotland by geography and landscape but also in spirit.
The landscape of the Scottish Highlands has been described in many ways, ranging from cold, rugged and desolate to something so strong and raw that it can only be out of a book. The Highlands cannot be summed up in one description, with the hills, glens and views meaning something different and personal to everyone who has ever seen the Highlands in person or only in spirit, through a movie or photo.
The Scottish Highlands can boast to hold some of the most unique and interesting tourist destinations in Britain. The Highlands hold a wide array of destinations ranging from magnificent castles to something a little more unique. There are many castles, like the ruins of Tor castle, which overlook the majestic river Lochy and Tioram Castle which sits on a tidal island in Loch Moidart, being the more prominent and well known.
But some of the attractions are slightly out of the usual. Handa Island runs tours of a magnificent sea island, with breathtaking beaches and rock faces, but there is one major difference in this tourist spot. The views are alive, Handa is a world renowned bird sanctuary, at times being home to 200,000 seabirds. The birds settle on the sheer rock face, giving the illusion of a living wall.
But that isn’t all that the Scottish Highlands hold, Stone Age villages can be found through out the whole region. There are countless Stone Age sites spread through the Scottish Highlands, it would be impossible to catalogue and describe them all, but one of the most prominent and possibly the most known is Grey Cairns of Camster. This is the oldest Stone Age site in all of Britain, throughout history it has been used to bury Scottish Highland chiefs.
The Scottish Highlands are a standing reminder of Scotland’s history, no other place in all of Britain is as in touch with it’s past as the Highlands.
No account short of an encyclopedia can give a full account of the history of the Scottish Highlands. The past of the Highlands is filled with feuding clans, revolutions and countless kings and chieftains.
