Glasgow

The Scottish city of Glasgow has a long and impressive history stretching almost two thousand years back. And although Glasgow has now received many awards and accolades for it’s rich culture and architecture, it was not the metropolis it is today, with it’s humble beginning and perseverance, it is a true example of Scottish mentality.

Earliest evidence suggests that Glasgow began its life around 80 AD, when the Romans began trading with the local fisherman and Celtic Druids. The small community began taking its first steps in becoming what it is today.

Glasgow had by the 12th century reached a population of around 1,500, which at the time made it a settlement of importance. It soon became a burgh of the barony, making it once again an important trade point. Glasgow continued to grow at an astonishing rate, and in 1451 the University of Glasgow was built, at the time it was the only university in Scotland and only the fourth in the United Kingdom.

Around the 16th century, the craftsmen and traders in Glasgow began to experience increased power and respect, Glasgow began to really strive as a business capital of Scotland. With the increased power of merchants and crafters, Glasgow began to open itself up to foreign trade. Around the 17th century Glasgow established strong trade links with the New World, especially with tobacco states like Virginia, and this created not only Glasgow’s but Scotland’s, first millionaires.

During the 18th century Glasgow turned in another direction to bring itself glory, industrial labor. The prosperous city of Glasgow attracted many immigrants from areas like Ireland, Eastern Europe and the Highlands, this provided the city with a deep labor pool upon which to build itself up another. Heavy construction soon proved to be the highest wealth bringer, with ship and locomotive construction being the highest earners. And with this wealth came an uprising of culture in Glasgow. Grand public buildings, libraries and parks were constructed, equaling and surpassing any European city at the time, this was truly one of Glasgow highest peaks.

Glasgow continued to grow with no sign of stopping until the 20th century. The First and Second World War, sent Glasgow into a great industrial and cultural decline. The problem was later compacted by the return of large number of people from the wars and a sudden swell in the population. Glasgow became a mediocre city losing its previous glories.

But astoundingly Glasgow has in the past 20 years had an astounding turn around with the introduction of cultural and tourist campaigns, to clean up the city and return it to it’s former glory. This time Glasgow is returning as a cultural destination filled with tourist attractions, galleries, museums, shopping and gardens. In 1990 Glasgow won the European City of Culture award and more recently the UK City of Architecture and Design Award.
