Loch Ness Monster

Loch Ness Monster

If you look at any piece of our quality jewelry, you will see a Clan symbol. These symbols differ from one Scottish Clan to the next, each one carrying it’s own meaning and history. But, in the broader picture these symbols all represent Scotland. One other such powerful symbol is the Loch Ness Monster.

Whether you believe in it or not, it’s undeniable that you can’t think of Scotland with out thinking of Nessie, and the other way round of course.

The first recorded occurrence of the Loch Ness Monster in its current form was on the 2nd of May 1933 (although, later some claimed to have witnessed the Loch Ness Monster at an earlier date). It was allegedly sighted by Mr. and Mrs. John Mackay, who claimed to have seen "an enormous animal rolling and plunging on the surface." Belief in the Loch Ness Monster began from almost that moment, with journalist from across Great Britain being sent there to investigate. In fact a circus even offered ₤20,000 for the capture of the Loch Ness Monster.

Numerous “sightings” followed the announcement. All were equally vague and probably fake. Newspapers and locals businesses enjoyed the interest in the Loch Ness Monster (and the revenue it subsequently brought to them). This might have had something to do with the survival of the rumor, since no widely accepted photo emerged until 1934. Although it’s photographer claimed it to be a fake in 1994.

There are many ideas, and vast quantities of “evidence” both supporting and refuting the Loch Ness Monster. It is widely believed by researchers that, if the Loch Ness Monster were real it would have to be a descendant of an extinct plesiosaur (a type of dinosaur). Yet, sightings claiming that the Loch Ness Monster had humps put this theory into greater doubt, as the plesiosaur did not. Other ideas have included, bubbles from underwater volcanic activity, large sturgeon, wakes from boats, waves, logs or seals.

The biggest piece of modern evidence for the Loch Ness Monster is a set of underwater photographs. The photographs were taken by Dr. Robert Rines, who used an underwater camera that was attached to his boat. The photos show an unexplained shape that is claimed to be the fin of the Loch Ness Monster.

On the other hand there is no direct evidence that the Loch Ness Monster doesn’t exist. Although, there is much evidence disputing the geniuses of many of the photos and videos of the Loch Ness monster.

No matter whether you believe it a hoax or a yet undiscovered creature, the legend and myth of the Loch Ness Monster survives. The Loch Ness Monster is part of the mysterious image of Scotland, it is one of our national symbols.

Diana Gabaldon, in one of her time travel novels, has her character, Claire Fraser, encounter the Loch Ness
"Monster", described as "beautiful and peaceful". Claire comes to assume that Nessie, too, may be a "time traveller", i.e. there is a portal in the depths of Loch Ness that allow Nessie to come and go from this time to others. Wouldn't it be wonderful to believe?
