Part 11
This article continues writing about Scottish history.
---
As at the time of the English withdrawal, Mary was still a child, her mother Marie took over as regent of Scotland. Due to her close ties with France, this became a time of strong cultural exchange between the two countries. This saw to strengthen the ties between France in Scotland. Unfortunately not all saw this situation in a similar manner, especially amongst the Protestants. This was best seen at the death of Marie, support for the Auld Alliance crumbled without the backing of the regent. In 1560 the Scottish parliament drew up the “Treaty of Edinburgh”, which officially tried to end the Auld Alliance.
Although in effect this is the time in Scottish history which saw the closing of the Auld Alliance, it was not official backed by Mary 1587. Mary had taken the throne of Scotland shortly after her mother’s death in 1560. She held the position for seven years. She had lost control of her country, being replaced with major powers of the Protestants. She was imprisoned and held captive in Loch Leven Castle. She escaped and went on to lead a force in an attempt to secure her old position by force, she was defeated in 1568 at the battle of Langside. She was succeeded by her son, James IV who went on to become the first King of England, Ireland and Scotland.
Scottish history moved on to the reformation next, which I will write about in the following article.
