Scottish National Anthem

Scotland does not indeed posses its own legally recognized Scottish national anthem.

Because Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, the Scottish Executive proclaims and insists that the UK national anthem, God save the Queen should be the official Scottish National Anthem. This view does not bode well with Scots with a deeper sense of national identity.

The argument for a Scottish national anthem is mostly based on a the principal that, if Scotland is too see itself and be seen as self fulfilling identity it needs an Scottish national anthem to identify itself with. On a smaller scale it is also argues that a Scottish national anthem is needed for situations like sports events where the supporters can have a single song which is meant to unite and represent them.

Currently there are two alternatives as to a possible Scottish national anthem, they are The Flower of Scotland and Scotland the Brave. Although it must also be said that there are a number of other titles which enjoy a certain following amongst those wanting a Scottish national anthem. Of these, the most prominent are Scots Wha Hae, Freedom Come-All-Ye and Highland Cathedral.

With the current lack of an agreed upon Scottish national anthem, the situations that would normally would call upon the use of an anthem have had no common song. At the opening of the Scottish Parliament “A Man’s a Man for a’that” was sung while at the medal-receiving ceremony at the Common Wealth games Scotland the Brave was used and at the begging of all Scottish national football team’s games Flower of Scotland was played.
