Oban Distillery

Oban Distillery is one of the smallest Scotch whisky distilleries in Scotland.

The Oban distillery was established in 1794 by two brothers, John and Hugh Stevenson. They continued to run the distillery until 1866, when it was bought by Peter Curnstie. The establishment continued to go through multiple changes in ownership to come to its present day incarnation. In 1883, the Oban distillery was bought by Walter Higgins, who also refurbished, repaired and upgraded the whole building. In 1898, ownership changed to Alexander Edward, and Dewars of Distilleries Company Limited in 1925. It hasn’t changed ownership since. Although that is not to say that the business model has not changed.

Oban Distillery being one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, with only two pot stills, only has capabilities to produce a limited amount of Scotch whisky ranges. As such, the whisky it produces is paid more attention than might be expected from most distilleries. It also means that a heavier reliance is placed on the tourist information center of the Oban Distillery than typical for a relatively small distillery. Seeing as how the town of Oban is relatively small, and historically grown around the distillery (as it far outdates the building of the town), it is not hard to see this as a truth.

Currently, Oban Distillery produces one line of Scotch whisky, their 14 year blend, this also comes in a distillers special edition bottle.
